Remodeling Ideas for Empty Nesters
(What to do with your child’s old room)

It is a bittersweet situation. Your kids will soon leave home to start their own lives, and surely they will do great things. But it is scary and sad to think they won't be under the same roof anymore.

But the big question is, what will you do with their old room?

If you need help figuring out what to do with this newly vacated bedroom, here are some ideas for how to use the newly empty space in your home.

Craft/Hobby Room

Painting, pottery, and woodworking are all popular hobbies to take on once the kids are out of the house, and now you'll have plenty of space to create your next project.

If the room currently has carpet, it's a good idea to remove it in favor of something easier to clean. Water-resistant ceramic or porcelain tiles are excellent options and come in almost any color or pattern you can imagine. This will create an excellent base to design around.

Whatever hobby you choose, you will need some bright, overhead lighting. Recessed lighting can be a good option for a craft room, and you can add as many lights as you think are necessary. You could also install a ceiling fan with a large bright light, which will also help with temperature control and ventilation.

A workbench with drawers or cabinets and a countertop are very handy for a hobby room and can provide lots of storage. We can install built-in shelving as well, to keep your supplies organized.

Home office is the perfect use for your childs bedroom after they move out

Home Office

Remote work is here to stay. If your workspace consists of a laptop at your dining table, let's upgrade that! Since you have the space, turn it into a home office.

First, install some nice hardwood floors and paint the room in a warm, soothing blue, gray, or even peach. Those colors have proven to boost creativity and reduce stress. Next, some built-in cabinets and shelves will help you stay organized while displaying photos or other prized possessions, making it an excellent Zoom backdrop.

Including natural light by installing a skylight or oversized windows will be a great mood booster during your workday and should not be overlooked. Last but not least, you need desk space. This should have enough space to hold your computer, keyboard, and any files or paperwork you may need to reference throughout your day.

Home gyms are a great use of extra bedroom space

Home Gym

Adjusting to life as an empty nester is tough, and exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mood. If going to the gym doesn't seem like a new habit you're ready to pick up, turn the spare bedroom into a private workout space.

Again, starting with the floors, install some rubberized flooring to reduce noise and impact from heavy weights and equipment. You'll also want some full-length mirrors to check out your form. If you like rocking out while working out, install a surround sound system.

Of course, you will need equipment. Perhaps you'll want a weight rack, or maybe a treadmill and a place to stretch. Either way, investing in quality equipment and configuring it in a safe and effective way will get you feeling your best before you know it.

What ideas do you have for home now that you're an empty nester? We'd love to hear all about them! Let's get in touch to discuss how we can help transform the empty space into a functional and enjoyable room.
